When we went to the library last week, my preschooler picked out a book called Madeline and the Cats of Rome. It wasn’t terribly surprisingly since her main goals are becoming a veterinarian and acquiring 100 cats. She also loves the Madeline books, but that’s very secondary to the cat phase we’re going through.
But I thought Madeline would make a fantastic bento. I threw in two leftover pasta bowties and a few cherry tomatoes with cat picks since she’s into the Cats of Rome book. The MADELINE letters are made from yellow bell pepper – here’s a great tutorial on how to cut them out easily.
The French flag was a must, bien sûr, since Madeline takes place in France – it’s made from blueberries, raspberries, and a little wedge of brie cut in half. There’s also a little treat in the form of dark chocolate in the middle of the lunchbox.
Madeline’s little face is made from a piece of bread, some provolone and cheddar cheeses, nori seaweed (it’s pretty flavorless and can be found at a health food store or a well-stocked grocery store), a carrot turned through my little hand-held spiralizer, and two raspberry bits for her cheeks.
